Al Fresco Art Club, April 12, 2020: hard edges, soft edges, an a bonus scowl

Today’s challenge was to use hard and soft edges. I used Clip Studio Paint on my iPad for this challenge. Before I started I created a round, hard brush with opacity jitter, similar to the brush Sinix uses in his video “This Best Brush for DIgital Painting (Beginners)” — a terrific tutorial. At the end of the hour I ended up with the painting above.

This was a real learning experience, done without a sketch. Instead, I blocked in shapes with a large brush, created some hard edges, then blended them to soft edges. Unfortunately, I completely missed the whimsical expression in my reference photo and ended up with a picture of a dour man who has just sucked on a lemon.
