Proofreading, again

For today’s book work I asked my partner to proofread what I’ve done. This was the first time that she had seen the entire book.

She liked the pictures but didn’t like my writing. It was too wordy. There were many redundancies that over-explained the pictures. There were too many exclamation points…a sure sign that I was trying too had to get my point across, that I lacked confidence in my story.

After making the many changes, I felt a wave of relief just knowing that I had averted publishing an unfinished book. Tomorrow I’ll be reading the book aloud to make sure that it’s actually readable before I publish it.

And Yet Another Proofreading!

I’m going to be publishing my second children’s picture book on Friday, October 30. I’ve been reluctant to set a publication date, but I now feel certain that the book is as good as it’s going to get. It feels good to step out of the dark tunnel into the white light.

I proofread the the entire book again and tweaked a few pages and edited the text. You know what? I’m going to do the same thing again tomorrow!

I’ve stopped putting Amazon affiliate links into the posts. I personally don’t mind seeing affiliate links in posts, and sometimes I actually follow the link to make sure one of my favorite bloggers gets a few dollars for his efforts. My reason for leaving out affiliate links is that I’m really pushed for time these days and I’d rather spend my extra few minutes tweaking my posts. I especially need to spend more time proofreading them.

My problem with proofreading is that I hate to reread my writing. Rereading is painful drudgery. Most of the time, when I type the last word of a post, instead of rereading what I’ve just typed, I say to hell with it and push “Save & Publish” button. The consequence is that every post has typos and missing words. Fortunately, my partner reads my posts and gives me a post-it with a list of my careless errors and oversights. If there are no errors in this post, it’s because she took the time to make sure I don’t embarrass myself excessively.
