Page 21, Third Version

Yet another version of page 21, this time giving the volcano demon some energy lines. I tried painting flames dripping from his swirling corona, but that was a flop. I spent some time working on the eyes and then took a dive into digital features and used Clip Studio Paint’s “Saturated Lines” — those radial line blasting out of the demon. I like them because they say “energy.”

In my first attempts at this volcano demon I tried being “painterly”, but those paintings sucked. When I tried to draw the pictures using dark outlines, they sucked. I finally settled on this look. I will use this painting in the book because:

  • It’s graphic.

  • It’s simple.

  • It gets the point across.

  • It doesn’t look like I was trying to be painterly and failed.

  • It captures my vision of the volcano demon in his evil form.
